Cable trays carry power and control cabling through plants, substations, and commercial buildings. Choosing the wrong type or finish means either overspending or reworking the installation. This guide covers the three tray families, the finishes that matter, and what a supplier needs from you to quote accurately.
  1. The three types, in one sentence each Tray-type cable trays are solid-bottom trays for general cable support and where shielding matters. Ladder-type trays use side rails and rungs - light weight, excellent ventilation, and the standard choice for power runs. Slot-type (perforated) trays suit smaller control, communication, and instrumentation cables and are common in clean installations.
  1. Material and finish decide service life Electro-galvanized steel is fine for clean indoor areas. Hot-dip galvanized suits outdoor exposure and damp plant environments. Stainless steel is reserved for corrosive atmospheres - chemical plants, coastal sites, food processing washdown areas. Match the finish to the environment, not to the budget, or you pay twice.
  1. Sizing basics Standard widths run 200 to 800 mm and side heights 60 to 150 mm, in 3-metre lengths. The key number is the total cable cross-section you need to support: allow roughly 40% fill and add headroom for future circuits. Load ratings are published per span - a tray rated for 1.5 m spans cannot be stretched to 3 m without sagging.
  1. Accessories to specify up front Covers for dust and water protection, horizontal and vertical bends, tees, crosses, reducers, and cable clamps. Stating them in the RFQ prevents a supplier from quoting bare straight sections and invoicing the accessories later.
  1. What to send for quotation A cable schedule with sizes and quantities, the route length, the span between supports, the environment (indoor, outdoor, corrosive), and whether covers are required. With those five inputs a supplier should return a line-item quote with weights and finishes in one or two working days.
