How to Source Control Panels From China: A Buyer's Guide
A buyer's guide to sourcing control panels from China through a sourcing partner — the build-shop vs factory vs partner decision, realistic lead times, UL handling, and the RFQ lines that protect you.

You need a control panel for a machine, a skid, or a line. The local quote came back above the project budget, or the lead time ran past your commissioning date. Someone says, "Just source it from China." Then what?
The phrase "source it from China" hides three completely different buying models, and the one you pick changes your price, your lead time, your certification risk, and how much of the project you personally have to manage. This guide walks through the three models, the numbers you can realistically expect, how UL is actually handled, and the RFQ lines that keep you out of trouble.

Build shop, factory, or sourcing partner—what is actually different?
Most buyers use these terms interchangeably. They are not the same purchase.
- A build shop takes your drawing and builds to it. One workshop, one quote, you manage the spec, the inspection, and the freight yourself. Good for a single, well-defined panel where you already know exactly what you want.
- Factory-direct means a large original-equipment manufacturer builds the panel, usually alongside its own product lines. You may get a lower unit price at volume, but minimum order quantities are higher, and customization outside their catalog is slow.
- A sourcing partner does not make the steel or the PLCs. We shortlist qualified build shops, manage the specification, the factory acceptance test (FAT), the documentation, and the logistics, and we consolidate multi-supplier orders into one shipment. You get one accountable point of contact instead of three.
Buyer Decision: If a supplier answers "we are a factory" but cannot show you a UL file number or a FAT record, you are not buying from a factory — you are buying from a reseller who skipped the part that protects you. Ask for the file number and the test record before you ask for the price.
Which model fits your order?
Your situation | Build a shop. | Factory-direct | Sourcing partner |
|---|---|---|---|
One panel, full drawing in hand | Good fit | Overkill (high MOQ) | Works, but heavier than needed |
Multiple panels, mixed specs | You juggle several shops. | Rigid catalog | One PO, one FAT, one shipment |
US-bound, needs UL 508A | You find a UL shop yourself. | Only if they hold the file | We match you to a UL-listed partner shop. |
Tight commissioning date | Dependent on one shop's queue | Dependent on their line | We load-balance across the network. |
You want one accountable contact. | You are the contact. | You are the contact. | We are the contact. |

What realistic MOQ and lead time look like
The "China is always 12 weeks" assumption is wrong, and the "China is always 2 weeks" assumption is also wrong. The timeline depends on what you are actually buying:
- A complete custom panel—from one unit. After we review your drawings and BOM, typical build time is 35–40 days. You are not waiting on a production line; you are waiting on engineering review, component sourcing, build, and FAT.
- Empty enclosures and shells—minimum 5 units, about 15 days. If your panel is mostly a packaged drive or a standard configuration, buying the shell and fitting it locally can compress the schedule.
- In-stock components (PLCs, drives, and breakers from the brands we distribute)—3–5 days to ship.
Stating it plainly: we do not hold a magic 5-day number for a fully custom panel, and anyone who quotes that without seeing your drawings is guessing. The honest range is above.
How UL and certifications are actually handled
If your panel is destined for the US market, UL 508A is the standard that matters. We do not hold a UL 508A listing ourselves, and we will not pretend to. What we do is match your order to a UL-listed partner shop and provide the file number in writing—a verifiable number you can check, not a logo on a PDF.
For machinery sold into Europe or Asia-Pacific, IEC 60204-1 governs the electrical equipment of machines, and NEMA 250 (or its IEC 60529 IP equivalent) governs enclosure ratings. We build to the standard you name and hand you the supplier's documentation. If you need a stamped calculation or a specific listing scope, tell us before we shortlist suppliers—that changes both the supplier pool and the timeline.
Engineering Note: A UL "recognized component" is not the same as a "UL-listed assembly." The price gap between the two is where most budget surprises come from. Put the exact listing scope in the RFQ.

The RFQ lines that protect you
Send these, and a supplier's answer tells you whether they can actually deliver:
- Drawings and BOM—not a verbal description. A panel built from a paragraph is a panel built from assumptions.
- I/O list and the target PLC brand if you have one (Mitsubishi, Siemens, ABB, and others we distribute).
- Target certifications—UL 508A with the required file scope, IEC 60204-1, or a named NEMA/IP rating.
- Environment—indoor, outdoor, washdown, hazardous area. This drives the enclosure, the gasket, and the coating.
- FAT requirements—what you want witnessed or documented before it leaves the shop.
A supplier who quotes without these is not saving you time. They are moving the risk to the far end of the project, where it costs ten times as much to fix.

Our capability, stated plainly
We source control panels built to the specifications above, with documented FAT records and the certification paperwork your market requires. For a complete custom panel, lead time is 35–40 days from approved drawings and BOM. Empty enclosures and shells run from 5 units at about 15 days. In-stock components ship in 3–5 days. Where a UL file number is required, we work with UL-listed partner shops and provide the file number in writing.
For budgeting, most panels and enclosures move under HTS 8537.10 (boards, panels, and consoles for electric control). A typical IP66 outdoor enclosure shell runs in the $180–650 range depending on size, material, and finish—the panel price on top of that depends entirely on the components you specify.
Where we sit: We are a sourcing partner, not a manufacturer and not a certified test lab. We do not issue UL or IEC certificates ourselves; the qualified partner shop or test lab does. We qualify the build against the standard you name and consolidate the documentation so your file is audit-ready on arrival.
FAQ
Is it safe to source a control panel from China?
Yes, when the purchase is managed. The failures come from skipping the FAT, accepting a "recognized component" where a "listed assembly" was required, or buying from a reseller with no verifiable file number. Put the certifications and the FAT in the RFQ and the risk drops to manageable.
What minimum order quantity do I need?
One. A complete custom panel can be built from a single unit after drawing and BOM review. Empty enclosures start at 5 units. You do not need a container to place a serious order.
How long does a custom panel actually take?
35–40 days from approved drawings and BOM for a complete panel, about 15 days for empty enclosures at the 5-unit minimum, and 3–5 days for in-stock components. Anyone quoting a custom panel in under two weeks without your drawings is guessing.
How is UL 508A handled if I need it for the US?
We match your order to a UL-listed partner shop and give you the file number in writing, with the listing scope stated. We do not hold the listing ourselves, and we do not issue the certificate—the qualified shop or test lab does.
What should I send to get an accurate quote?
Drawings, BOM, I/O list, the target PLC brand if you have one, the required certifications, the installation environment, and your FAT requirements. A quote built from anything less is a placeholder, not a price.
What if my panel needs a specific PLC brand?
Tell us. We distribute Mitsubishi, Siemens, ABB, and other major brands, so a named-brand BOM is normal for us—we source the components and build around them rather than substituting.
Get a panel sourced the right way.
Send us the drawings, the BOM, the I/O list, and the certifications your market requires. We reply within one business day with a sourced option, the build approach, and the FAT plan.
