IP65 vs IP66: What's the Difference for an Electrical Enclosure?

Short answer: Both IP65 and IP66 keep dust out and resist water, but IP66 withstands stronger, higher-pressure water jets than IP65. If the enclosure will be outdoors, hosed down, or hit by driving rain, choose IP66. If it is mostly sheltered and only gets occasional spray, IP65 is usually enough — and often cheaper.

What the IP digits mean

IP (Ingress Protection) codes come from IEC 60529 and tell you how well an enclosure keeps solids and water out. The first digit is solids (dust), the second is water:
  • First digit 6 = dust-tight (no ingress of dust)
  • Second digit 5 = water jets from any direction (no harmful effect)
  • Second digit 6 = powerful water jets from any direction (higher pressure, no harmful effect)
So IP65 and IP66 are identical against dust — the only difference is water pressure.

In practice, IP66 is the rating most buyers want for anything that lives outside or gets cleaned. IP65 is fine for enclosures under a roof or behind a panel where direct jetting is unlikely.

Which one do you need?

Choose IP66 when:
  • The enclosure is outdoors and exposed to weather or driving rain
  • It will be hosed down (food, pharma, cleanroom, wash bays)
  • It sits near wash-down or rinse lines in a plant
  • You want one rating that covers "outdoor + cleanable" without debate
Choose IP65 when:
  • The enclosure is sheltered (under a roof, inside a cabinet, on a machine frame)
  • It only meets occasional spray or splashing
  • You want to save cost and the spec is a general "dust-tight + splash-proof"

Practical rule: If a customer specifies "IP66 stainless," a NEMA 4X stainless enclosure meets the intent. If they specify plain "IP66" on carbon steel, NEMA 4 is the closer match but will not resist corrosion like 4X.

Material still decides corrosion life

The IP number says nothing about corrosion. For outdoor or coastal sites, pair IP66 with 316 stainless (best pitting resistance) or at least 304 stainless. For lighter or highly corrosive needs, fiberglass-reinforced polyester (FRP) is a strong non-metallic option that is naturally corrosion-proof. Carbon steel can be painted for indoor IP65 use but will rust outdoors.

A: Only if it is sheltered and will not be directly jetted or driven by heavy rain. For truly outdoor or hosed-down sites, use IP66.
