304 vs 316 Stainless Steel Enclosure: Which Grade Do You Need?
Short answer: Both 304 and 316 stainless stop most rust, but 316 has molybdenum that resists pitting and crevice corrosion in salt, chemical, and chloride environments. Use 304 for indoor or mild environments (lower cost); use 316 for outdoor, coastal, food/pharma wash-down, and chemical sites where corrosion is the real risk.

What the grades are
- 304 stainless (UNS S30400): the common "18/8" grade — 18% chromium, 8% nickel. Good all-round corrosion resistance for indoor and dry/outdoor-sheltered use.
- 316 stainless (UNS S31600): adds ~2–3% molybdenum. That single addition sharply improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion from chlorides (salt spray, seawater, cleaning chemicals).
Both are non-magnetic-ish austenitic grades and weld cleanly — the difference buyers care about is where they survive.

Practical rule: If the enclosure sees salt, chlorine, or chemicals — or it must look clean for years outdoors — specify 316. If it lives indoors or under a roof in a dry plant, 304 saves money with no real downside.
When 316 is worth the premium
Choose 316 when any of these apply:
- Coastal or marine sites (salt in the air pits 304 within seasons)
- Wash-down lines using chlorinated or acidic cleaners (food, beverage, pharma, cleanroom)
- Chemical, pool, or wastewater atmospheres
- Outdoor year-round where you want minimal maintenance and no rust staining
Choose 304 when:
- The enclosure is indoor or sheltered, dry most of the time
- Corrosion exposure is low and budget matters
- You want a clean, food-safe look without paying for marine grade

Grade pairs with the rating, not instead of it
Stainless grade decides corrosion life; the IP/NEMA rating decides ingress protection. For outdoor corrosive sites you usually want 316 stainless + IP66 (NEMA 4X). For indoor clean areas, 304 + IP54/IP65 is often enough. The grade and the rating solve different problems — specify both.
