Obsolete PLC Replacement: How to Source Discontinued Modules

A discontinued PLC module should not stop your line. How to source obsolete Mitsubishi, Siemens, ABB, and Allen-Bradley parts, and when a replacement or upgrade beats a gamble on eBay.

The problem: one discontinued module, one stopped line

A machine built ten years ago suddenly needs a CPU, a power supply or an I/O module that the OEM lists as obsolete. The panel still runs your production, but a single unavailable part now threatens the whole line. This is one of the most common emergencies we are asked to solve — and almost always solvable without ripping out the control system.

Option 1 — source the exact obsolete module

If the program, wiring and spares are all tied to that exact part, the fastest fix is to find a genuine replacement unit.
  • We hold and source discontinued Mitsubishi, Siemens, ABB, Allen-Bradley, Omron and Schneider modules through our Foshan and international supplier network.
  • For many classics (e.g. Mitsubishi FX, Siemens S7-200/300, Allen-Bradley SLC/PLC-5) there is still steady secondary-stock worldwide.
  • We check the unit before shipment — firmware version, markings and condition — so you are not gambling on an untested eBay listing.
Lead time is usually 3–5 days from available stock, far faster than waiting on a factory that no longer makes it.

Option 2 — cross to a current equivalent

Sometimes the exact part is gone everywhere. A current-generation equivalent can drop in with a minimal change:
  • Same brand, next series (e.g. S7-1200 in place of S7-200) with a conversion of the I/O mapping.
  • Pin- and form-factor-compatible modules that keep your panel layout intact.
  • We supply the mapping notes and, where needed, a small adapter or re-termination plan.
This is cheaper than a full rewrite and avoids paying scarcity prices for a discontinued part.

Option 3 — targeted retrofit, not a full rebuild

If several modules are obsolete or the program is worth modernising, a targeted retrofit beats scrapping the machine:
  • Keep the mechanical and field wiring; replace only the controller core.
  • Reuse existing Mitsubishi/Siemens/ABB brands your maintenance team already knows.
  • We integrate modern PLC with the legacy I/O where a hard cut-over is risky.
The goal is always: restore production fast, with the least new engineering.

Watch-outs when sourcing obsolete parts

  • Counterfeit / refurbished-as-new — always buy tested, with a condition statement.
  • Firmware mismatch — a same-number module on different firmware can refuse to run your program.
  • Single-source risk — if one module failed, others of the same vintage are close behind; stock a sparing set while you can.
