Food Processing Control Panels: What to Specify and How to Buy

Washdown ratings, stainless enclosures, component protection and documentation - what food processing control panels actually need before you send an RFQ.

Food processing plants run on control panels that live in an unforgiving environment: washdown hoses, sanitizers, humidity, and temperature swings. A panel specified for general industry can fail in months here - corrosion on enclosures, water ingress into PLCs, and drives that trip from overheating.
This guide covers the five decisions that matter most when specifying food processing control panels, so your next RFQ is clear enough for suppliers to quote accurately.
  1. Enclosure material and washdown rating Stainless steel 304 or 316 is the default for washdown zones. IP66 keeps out high-pressure water; IP69K handles high-temperature washdown. Mild steel with powder coating is only acceptable in dry, non-washdown areas. Specify the rating by zone: processing floor, packing area, or utility room.
  1. Component protection and layout PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs should be mounted to stay clear of direct spray. Door-mounted HMIs need sealed bezels. Cable entries should be bottom-entry or sealed glands - never top-entry in washdown zones.
  1. Drives and motor control VFDs give you speed control on conveyors, mixers, and pumps, and reduce mechanical stress on starts. Specify the drive brand family (Siemens, Mitsubishi, ABB, Danfoss or equivalent) and braking requirements.
  1. Documentation you should receive Before shipment, ask for: wiring diagrams, BOM, I/O list, FAT report, and panel manuals. These documents are what make commissioning and future maintenance possible.
  1. Supplier questions worth asking Ask how the supplier handles stainless fabrication, what testing is done before shipment (wiring verification, insulation test, functional test), and whether they review requirements before quotation.
